FIDELIO: ALICE’S JOURNEY

Director: LUCIE BORLETEAU

97 minutes, France, 2014, Digital

This film was released on Friday 2nd October 2015 and is no longer screening.

Leaving behind her devoted Norwegian boyfriend, 30-year-old marine mechanic Alice, played by the excellent Ariane Labed (who also features in October new release The Lobster, see page 10), takes up a month-long post on an immense, male-dominated cargo ship called the Fidelio, replacing a crew member recently killed in an accident. Once aboard, she soon finds the intimate and detailed diary left by her predecessor in her cabin, an unsettling discovery compounded by the revelation that the captain of the freighter is Gael, a man she had a romantic relationship with years before as a cadet and about whom her feelings remain unresolved.

Raising important questions about the connection between love and fidelity, director Lucie Borleteau’s feature debut is a striking and impressive portrait of a self-assured and sexually liberated young woman who nevertheless struggles with decisions she makes in an isolated and transitory environment.
